Carbohydrate Wisdom

Any diet that provides 100 grams or less of carbohydrate daily is classified by this article as low carb. This will quickly deplete the glycogen stores in muscles and liver. Fatty acids stored in adipose tissue (fat cells) are now released into the blood and processed by the liver and some are turned into glucose and some remain fatty acids and both provide ATP for muscle contraction. One of the by products of this process is ketone bodies which can provide energy to brain and nervous system. The problem with gluconeogenesis (non glucose turned into glucose) is it provides fuel to the muscle LESS efficiently than glycogenesis (glucose). Topping off Your Fuel Tank

If you exercise hard, you need to understand the importance of carbohydrate in your diet. Knowing how much carbohydrate to consume before, during, and after competition and training are important to athletic performance.

The average male athlete can store about 1,500 to 1,900 kilocalories (kcal) of carbohydrate: 60-80 kcal in the blood, 360-440 kcal in the liver and 1,300 to 1,400 kcal in the muscles. Two hours of exercise or a 20 mile run can deplete liver and muscle glycogen (stored carbohydrates) levels. Obvious signs of glycogen depletion are heavy, tired muscles, poor performance and possibly complete fatigue.

An athlete in hard training and competition can use several approaches to assure optimal carbohydrate stores before, during and after competition and training. Knowing how and when to consume carbohydrates will lead to improved performance and recovery. - From Body And Fitness

Carbohydrate Wisdom

Now, carbohydrates do play a part in the battle against the bulge, and they do have something to do with the increased incidence of type II diabetes among adults and children. But it really comes down to people not exercising enough and overeating in general.

However, I'm a firm believer that the types of carbohydrates you ingest and the times during the day when you eat them can make all the difference in the world.

Generally speaking, nutrient timing (in this case, carbohydrate timing) pays huge dividends in terms of how your body will metabolize and partition certain foods at specific times. Learning when these times are can make a vast difference when it comes to body composition changes.

Carbohydrates do serve a purpose and should be a part of your diet, especially if you're involved in any type of regular physical activity that includes a healthy dose of resistance training and high(er) intensity cardiovascular training (sorry, walking on a treadmill doesn't count). It's just a matter of learning the right types and optimal times to ingest them.

So please, put back the diarrhea-inducing Atkins chocolate bar and pick up an apple. You'll be okay, I promise.
